My tax refund check got taken for child support.  Can I do anything about it?

If you owe current child support or back child support, your tax refund or your tax rebate check can be intercepted to pay your obligation.  If you do not owe any child support arrearage (back child support) and you are current on your child support, the withholding may be in error and you could appeal it by requesting an administrative hearing.  This occasionally happens, for example, when an arrearage is forgiven or otherwise changed by a court order.  If you are the spouse of a person whose tax refund was intercepted for child support and you filed a joint return, you can ask for your portion of the refund by filing an innocent spouse claim.
